Overview

SSATP is an international partnership dedicated to supporting transport policy development and capacity building across Africa. Its work brings together national governments, regional economic communities, African institutions, and international development partners to promote safe, reliable, inclusive, and cost‑effective transport systems. This case study highlights the design and production of multiple SSATP publications, including the Annual Report 2018 and several thematic and country‑specific studies. The work required a scalable editorial system capable of supporting diverse content while maintaining a consistent and recognizable visual identity.

Challenge

SSATP publications communicate complex policy research, technical data, and long‑form analysis to a broad audience that includes policymakers, researchers, and international partners.

The main challenges were:

  • Translating dense, data‑heavy content into clear, readable publications

  • Creating a visual system flexible enough to adapt to different countries and topics

  • Ensuring consistency across reports while meeting institutional and donor branding standards

The main challenges were:

  • Translating dense, data‑heavy content into clear, readable publications

  • Creating a visual system flexible enough to adapt to different countries and topics

  • Ensuring consistency across reports while meeting institutional and donor branding standards

Solution

A modular editorial design system was developed to support a wide range of report types and formats.

Key elements included:

  • A strong typographic hierarchy to guide long‑form reading

  • Consistent grid systems adaptable to different publication lengths

  • Clear visual language aligned with SSATP and World Bank standards

  • Structured layouts for charts, tables, and infographics to enhance data clarity

This approach allowed each publication to retain its own focus while remaining part of a cohesive body of work.

What’s included in a monthly retainer?

Each retainer includes a set number of design or strategy requests per month, priority turnaround, and a dedicated point of contact. It’s built for teams who want ongoing support without starting from scratch every time.

How many requests can I make per month?

We typically handle up to two active requests at a time, with new ones queued as they’re completed. Most deliverables are turned around within 48–72 hours, depending on complexity.

Is a retainer better than a one-off project?

If you need ongoing design support, faster turnarounds, or regular iterations, a retainer is often more cost-effective and collaborative than starting fresh each time.

Who will I be working with?

You’ll work directly with senior designers and strategists. No middle layers, no fluff—just experienced people doing the work.

Do you work with international clients?

Yes. Most of our clients are remote. We’re fully set up to collaborate across time zones with clear communication and shared tools.
