INTRODUCTION

Our team collaborated with Meraki Communication Group to create graphics for a fundraising campaign by Black Girls Code (BGC) a nonprofit organization. This campaign sought to support five summer camp programs, introducing girls to the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). These disciplines are crucial for developing technology skills, which is the core of its mission. The plan was to welcome campers in four cities and online.

Challenge

Design is a language in which we speak fluently

The concept we needed to develop aimed to empower and inspire young Black women, encouraging their active participation in the tech industry as creators and visionaries. We achieved this by introducing them to computer programming and technology through the creative lens of art. This innovative approach enhanced their technical skills and ignited their passion and curiosity. Our graphics had to be visually appealing, catering to both young girls and potential donors.

Solution

Design is a language in which we speak fluently

The camp project revolved around the creation of abstract art through coding. In this endeavor, our concept aimed to represent the vibrant spirit of Black girls using a combination of bold geometric shapes, vivid colors, and a fusion of ancestral and contemporary elements, including accessories, hairstyles, and complementary color palettes. By integrating these distinctive facial features into our design, we sought to provide the girls with a visual representation of themselves within the graphics, fostering a sense of identification and belonging within a community.
We wanted to visually represent these young girls' opportunities to engage with their peers, learn new skills, build cnfidence, discover a cmmunity of like-minded leaders, and celebrate their creative achievements.

Relevance

The Black Girls Code organization was thrilled with the result, and the campaign was successfully uploaded to the donor website.

Projects like these broaden our perspective. They allow us to see through the eyes of the girls and the donors, inviting us to engage in social causes that make coding accessible to every Black girl, regardless of her financial means.
